Requests for Photos & Other Media

Reproduction of digital media (images, audio, and film) and archival materials in the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments can be provided under use agreement for research or publication.

Policies for Photo and Media Requests

• Standard processing time is three to one week if media is available. Requests for new digitization will take longer depending on available resources. The requestor will be provided with an estimated time frame before we proceed with the request.

• Payment is required for non-academic use of requested media. If payment is required in a given instance, it must be made in US dollars by check before work begins.

• A use agreement will be sent with the media, including those for research purposes only. Permission for media is not granted until the permission form has been been sent.

• Permission is granted for one-time reproduction rights, one edition only, unless approved otherwise by prior agreement.

• All permissions are granted with the requirement that the requestor provides one gratis copy (tear sheet acceptable) of the publication or product to the CHSI.

• The CHSI reserves the right to limit the number of copies; to restrict the use of reproduction of rare, valuable, or sensitive materials; and to refuse permission for inappropriate use.

• The CHSI does not grant exclusive rights and retains its rights to publish and/or grant permissions for others to do so.

To request copies of digital media (images or documents) related to CHSI objects for research or publication use, please fill out the Media and Permission Request Form. This will enable us to fully understand the scope of the project involved and better assist the requestor. Please email chsi@fas.harvard.edu, subject line “Photo Request,” with any questions.
