Lane Snapper This lane snapper, whose modern scientific name is Lutianus synagris, was painted by Jacques Burkhardt during an expedition to Brazil, led by naturalist Louis Agassiz. Burkhardt was a classically trained painter who spent more than twenty years working as Agassiz’s personal artist. He captured vibrant images of animals glimpsed in the field and his illustrations brought life to Agassiz’s publications.
